I. Would like to hear more of your teaching on the baptism of the spirit and speaking in tongues. I have been in church for 22 years now and tongues will not come to me. I don’t understand
It’s important to know that God decides what gifts He gifts to us. The most important question to ask yourself is: are you desiring to honour and love Him?
Be encouraged for tongues isn’t necessary for His gift of salvation.
Hi Mrs Vee. Here’s a video I did about how to activate the gift of tongues in your life. This will help you to understand all about it. God bless. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kmfOJWsM4HU&t=486s
Hi. I’m guessing you are referring to “unintelligible babbling” when you refer to “the gift of tongues”
I don’t want to step on anyone’s toes, because I’m unsure whether NNM or Ptr Ryan is following Pentecostal practices, but I’ll try to answer as respectfully as I can.
There are two versions of the word “speaking in tongues” where one is biblical (ie. in referring to translating “tongues”) and the other is a belief within the Pentecostal denomination (ie. teachings from their understanding).
1) The first one is *Xenoglossia*, which is the phenomenon of being understood by other people who speak different a language or being able to speak a language foreign to your own without prior learning. As Paul said, “the chief purpose of the gift of speaking in tongues was to be a sign for those who did not believe and to spread the good news, the gospel of Christ (1 Cor 14).
That is all there is to it, no more, no less.
2) The second is *Glossolalia*, a practice by Pentecostals derived from a belief that it is a show of faith and an act to manifest the pouring of the Holy Spirit similar to Pentecost.
Incidentally Glossolalia is not exclusive to Pentecostal practices or the Christian faith. It has been observed in other religions as well as studied in both religious and nonsectarian institutions.
(In other religions)
Glossolalia have been observed in shamanic practices when they are trying to call the spirits and divination. Such as the Shamans in the Sudan, the Shango cult of the West Coast of Africa, the Zor cult of Ethiopia, the Voodoo cult in Haiti, and the Aborigines of South America and Australia.
(In religious institutions)
One denomination who took an interest in studying glossolalia are the Lutherians. The experiment took place where they simulated glossolalia, by having the speaker practice the act apart from a religious setting (ie. no praise and worship, no prayer, no teaching, etc) simply they had the speaker “speak in tongues” and the result was 80% followed suit. The findings that this is more in the person’s psyche rather than a holy phenomenon.
(In psychology)
Since I have written quite a long response I’ll just summarize key points.
-Glossolalia was observed to be a practice as well.
-Glossolalia increases dopamine, giving the person a feeling of Euphoria.
-People who are able to earnestly enter a state of Glossolalia suffer from a deeper psychological problem (ie. depression, anxiety, etc) stemming from current hardships and see it as an escape (Euphoric effects)
So, if you truly want to experience Glossolalia, just go to a Pentecostal service and just go with the flow. That’s all there is to it.
Despite everything I have said of Glossolalia, I do not take it as something “bad”. As it can be taken as an act to put them into a trance of worship. For me personally, whatever puts you most at ease, in the mindset of worship and resting in the arms of our Father, then that’s fine with me.
As they say, “Whatever floats your boat”
